Campaigning Critical Education at Schools

Is it possible if students in Indonesia are wearing no uniform? it means that they are set to be free to wear any yet appropriate suite. They are not confined to wear certain uniform. I myself keep on questioning when and hiw the idea of wearing uniform at schools once first time commenced, and why should it have been so.

No students inquire this “silly” question. Not because they have well understood about it, but it is most likely because they are not used to being critical to things in their surrounding. Exactly, that is due to the schools’ failure in evoking students’ critical thinking. The most common answer for this question might be because that is what commonly is, everywhere in the world, students are wearing uniform.

I myself agree with the idea of wearing uniform when it is aimed at campaigning the sense of equality. Inside the idea of uniform, there implied value of equality. Meaning that students have no room to show their social status, as they are dressed in the same pattern, motive, and colors of clothe. There might be implied other values. Are students aware about this, how uniform come to being obligatory? I believe, most students are not aware of it. However, when uniform is simply a matter of must, because you are students, that is the big deal. It is against how education is supposed to be.

What is education? we can understand the definition of education as the process of facilitating learning, or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits (www.wikipedia.com). The acquisition of those aspects are not supposed to be through dogmatization. Students are human, and human need to be treated as human. How is treating students as human? It is by involving their mind, soul and heart to understand things. Make students understand all school regulations, their roles as students, not just take everything for granted, is how education should be.

Elementary and high school Students at schools must wear uniform, whereas university students mostly can be free in dressing up. Why does it happen? How could it be? How if no rules on dressing at schools? is it possible? In Japan, even, male university students can wear short pants. Whereas the girls can wear mini skirt. Even sometimes extremely miny skirt. Why indonesian students cannot be the same as them. The answer can be simple, that it is due to different values between the both countries. Different geograpgical condition also matters. But, have schools made students understand about it? and why never students question it? The answer is that critical thinking has not been well campaigned yet at schools.
